Most of the damage occurred in an area between Jhelum and Mirpur, according to the head of Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority, Lieutenant General Mohammad Afzal.
However, the quake was felt from the Kashmir region and the Indian provinces of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana.
Pakistani Kashmiri Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan told AFP that hundreds of wounded were taken to a Mirpur hospital. Relief services are in progress.

Telephone towers, electric poles and roads were severely damaged by the earthquake. Deputy Inspector General of Mirpur Police, Sardar Gulfaraz, the concussion opened car-sized cracks in the roads.

The Pakistani army has mobilized airplanes, doctors and troops to the affected areas of Kashmir, said one of the government's spokesmen.

Two witnesses in Mirpur told AFP that a building collapsed in the city known for its luxury homes and close ties with the United Kingdom. Half of Mirpur's 450,000 inhabitants have a British and Pakistani passport.

Pakistan-controlled Kashmir had already suffered from the 7.6 magnitude earthquake of October 8, 2005, which killed more than 73,000 people and left 3.5 million homeless.
